International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first initiated in 1998 by UNESCO. It is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. The date is of particular importance: In the night of 22 to 23 August 1791, an uprising began in today's Haiti that played a crucial role in the abolition of transatlantic slave trade. Every year, cultural activities are organized around the globe to remember this event. UNESCO's "Slave Route" project helps to understand the history of slave trade and therewith fills the silence of the past.

The project has a strong emphasis on human rights education, and is currently being used to teach international human rights courses at Berkeley. One of the characteristics of this project is that it does not only aim to educate students about human rights, but it actively encourages their participation, by pushing them to think for themselves about a potential international framework for enforceable human rights.
Another one way of making students active parts of this projects, was by entrusting them the production of a film that should be viewed by other students and teachers around the world on international human rights day, 10 December. The idea is that students in all countries can use the same curriculum to learn about rights they all share. Teachers or students interested in this initiative should click here.
