International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first initiated in 1998 by UNESCO. It is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. The date is of particular importance: In the night of 22 to 23 August 1791, an uprising began in today's Haiti that played a crucial role in the abolition of transatlantic slave trade. Every year, cultural activities are organized around the globe to remember this event. UNESCO's "Slave Route" project helps to understand the history of slave trade and therewith fills the silence of the past.

The purpose of the website is to facilitate access to educational materials on human rights, enhance interaction and information sharing between UNAs, and to support closer engagement of UNAs with the work of the UN Human Rights Council and human rights treaty bodies.
The
website provides information on the United Nations human rights
mechanisms and their activities. It features
projects and events implemented by UNAs and other civil society organizations, forums for discussion on current and
emerging human rights issues and a members-only database to exchange working
papers and draft resolutions. It also provides links to activities and
initiatives of all major human rights civil society, governmental and
intergovernmental organizations. Human Rights Nexus is currently sponsored by the Russian Friends of WFUNA and UNA-Russia.
