International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first initiated in 1998 by UNESCO. It is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. The date is of particular importance: In the night of 22 to 23 August 1791, an uprising began in today's Haiti that played a crucial role in the abolition of transatlantic slave trade. Every year, cultural activities are organized around the globe to remember this event. UNESCO's "Slave Route" project helps to understand the history of slave trade and therewith fills the silence of the past.
The World Federation of United Nations Associations is pleased to announce WFUNA's Youth Seminar Series, which will be taking place during the International Year of Youth, August 2010- August 2011. The first Youth Seminar will be hosted in Oslo by UNA-Norway from 1-3 October 2010.
Human Rights Council Advisory Committee: Fifth Session, 2 - 6 August 2010
The Human Rights Council Advisory Committee held its 5th session from 2 to 6 August 2010 in Geneva. The Advisory Committee, consisting of 18 experts, acts as think-tank for the Human Rights Council. It provides studies and gives advice to the Council. During the past session, the Advisory Committee adopted its report to the Human Rights Council as well as four recommendations which dealt with the right to food, the right of peoples to peace, principles and guidelines for the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and the enhancement of international cooperation in the field of human rights.
Interview with Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in persons - Joy Ngozi Ezeilo
The WFUNA team had the chance to interview the Special Rapporteur on Trafficking, Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, who expressed the concerning issue of trafficking in persons, ways to combat the phenomenon and how NGOs and UNAs could contribute to the eradication of human trafficking.
The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) held an informal meeting with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) during its 77th session on 3 August 2010 in Geneva. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways of strengthening the interaction between the Committee and NGOs.
Special Procedures exchanges views with NGOs and NHRIs
During the 17th Annual Meetingof Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council, an exchange of views between Special Procedures and NGOs and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) took place in Palais Wilson in Geneva. Several Special Rapporteurs, as well as representatives of NGOs and NHRIs, were present. A fruitful discussion took place by the end of which both representatives of civil society and Special Rapporteurs were welcoming the new impetus for closer and better cooperation. A special focus of the debate was the impact of the code of conduct on the independence of the work of the Special Rapporteurs.
